In 2024 we are celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the RSCDS Vienna Branch.
Highlight will be our Vienna Whitsun Weekend for experienced dancers in Vienna, with Gary Coull teaching and Silke Grosholz as class musician. We are very happy to welcome James Gray and Matthias Rank as musicians for the evening dances and the ball on Sunday evening.
The venue for the weekend combines the dance hall, restaurant and hotel rooms under one roof. The Hotel Europahaus is surrounded by a small park, the city can be easily reached by public transport. The Vienna Woods are starting nearby, the famous Schönbrunn Palace is only a few subway stops away, and one of the most important Art Nouveau churches, St. Leopold am Steinhof is only 3km from the venue.
We are planning to offer optional afternoon activities and walk throughs of the dance programs for Saturday and Sunday if there is enough interest. More details will follow soon.
Registration opens on Saturday, 16 December 2023 at 12:00 lunchtime Vienna time.

Teacher and Musicians
It is our pleasure to offer you a weekend of dancing with some of the best teachers and musicians in the Scottish Dance world. Together they form a wonderful link between music and dancing and are looking forward to sharing their experience with you!
Gary Coull
Gary Coull has started dancing in Dufftown at the age of 10 and is teaching and dancing in Banffshire, Scotland. After joining the RSCDS at the age of 16 and gaining full teaching certificate in 2013, he has had a glittering career in the RSCDS being our present Chair-elect.
He has taught at numerous workshops in Scotland, Europe, North America and Australia ranging from day and weekend courses to big events like RSCDS and TAC Summer Schools.
Silke Grosholz
Silke started Scottish Country Dancing and playing classical piano in her childhood. After she attended a musician class with Muriel Johnstone in 1996, she decided to start playing for Scottish country dancing. With her friends from Munich she plays for different teachers, day schools and balls, all over Europe including RSCDS Summer School or our Friendship Weekends with Budapest and Prague.
Together with Gary she will form a wonderful team for our dance classes!
James Gray and Matthias Rank
James was born into a family actively involved in the local Scottish Country Dance scene. He grew up surrounded by a love of Scottish music and culture. His first piano lessons were with his grandmother, who played for his parents’ dance classes, and he later took up the accordion. He danced from birth (he had no choice!) and was even director of the first RSCDS spring fling. James has recorded several CDs, namely with Susie Petrov, Laura Risk, Andrew Lyon and his band Scottish Measure, Gregor Borland, and Keith Smith. His solo album “Piano Dance” comprises well-known recordings for dances like Sands of Morar and Iona Cross. His CD “Opus Dance” features his own compositions and provides music for his father Alec Gray’s book of dances Tweeddale Collection Volume 4.
Matthias started playing the violin at the age of 6. Matthias also became a Scottish Country Dancer which brought him to play Scottish music. He has played for many different dance events all over Europe and the UK, including RSCDS Summer School, and is looking forward to join James once again for the evening dances. Matthias dances in Munich and also plays regularly for their local dance class.
Classes will be taught by Gary Coull, to music from Silke Grosholz (piano).
Music for the evening dances will be provided by James Gray (piano) and Matthias Rank (fiddle).
